This large bull surprised us in its passing. The bulls
often tend to take longer dives than the rest of the pod, and often travel
farther from shore. This dorsal fin, which measures well over a meter is a
sure sign of a mature male. Notice the buckle along the back of the
dorsal, caused by the sheer weight of the fin.
Killer whale pods, matrilineal family groups, travel in
cohesive units. Offspring spend their entire lives with their mother.
