Resident Orca, Johnstone Straight, Vancouver Island

The resident Killer Whales (Orca) of Vancouver Island, are a sight to behold.

Having watched this pod for an hour from a distance we turned to leave.  Simultaneously, the pod turned and crossed our path.  Realizing this Orca was seemingly heading right for me, I scrambled for my camera, barely catching its passing fin.

The Northern, and Southern, Resident Orca have evolved with the salmon in the Pacific Northwest.  Today, they only eat fish, in contrast to the mammal eating Transient Orcas found globally.
