A morning paddle is rewarded with lunch in a
sheltered cove on the rugged outer coast of Nootka Island. While
ocean swell breaks on exposed reefs around the corner, this pocket beach remains calm.
Surrounded by ancient temperate rainforest, I stand on what is
called the Grassy Knoll, a huge rounded hill, covered with a myriad of flowers
and plants. It provides an unsurpassed view of the "bowling alley", a calm
passage between two lines of rough rocks, reefs, and islands in the Nuchatlitz.
